Hardest Goodbye

from Homecoming by Ryan Garrett

/

about

I wrote this about a friend who joined the military.

lyrics

Is there a reason? Is there a cause?
Do you feel completed? Or are you lost?
In this great big world have you found your way?
Do you know what I mean when I can't find the words to say
The tracks that you walked, the words that we talked
Still haunt my atmosphere
Things we used to do, all that we've been through
It still haunts me though you're not here

And I wonder where you are
I lay right where I used to lie
On the day you said that you were leaving
I could've cried
But that would have been the hardest goodbye

A clean uniform, a light packed suitcase
A synchronized watch, and a picture of her face
In this great big world I hope you found your way
I hope you know what I mean when I can't find the words to say
The tracks that you walked, the words that we talked
Still haunt my atmosphere
Things we used to do, all that we've been through
It still haunts me though you're not here

Whoever said a grown man doesn't cry
Has never had a broken heart in their life
Whoever said that this would all be easy
Never saw someone they looked up to leaving
And when it's all said and done
And the wars are all gone
There'll be a little one screaming, tears streaming
"Don't look now, daddy's marching home!"
