about

A song about growing up and the hard times I saw people around me face. Some situations have no solutions, you just have to do the best you can to get by. This is an alternate take on the song. This is a more stripped down acoustic/piano version of the song. It was originally going to be a digital bonus track on the Homecoming album to even out the price of digital and physical copies. But in the end, I loved it way too much not to include it on all copies of the album.

Originally released on the Homecoming album.

lyrics

I was far too young to remember
Those mountains in the rearview mirror
Or the paint on the sign that read "Harlan County Line"
But now I see it all so clear

How it's just a part of life
To find where you belong
And just how much you can take
And just how far you bend before you break

My name was caught up in the crosshairs
All the way up since junior high
We all had enemies. We all held grudges growing up.
But now they're the ones that seem to smile passing by

Hell it's just a part of life
To find where you belong
And just how much you can take
And just how far you bend before you break

I never knew what it was like to lose everything you own
But now I think I understand
Since I seen her stumble through the ashes
And the burnt black stains on her hands

It's just a part of life
To find where you belong
And just how much you can take
And just how far you bend before you break

Every now and then I catch wind
Of things going on back home
Like the hardest of times when they shut down the mines
And big time offices were hanging up their phones

With their SUV's getting paid off
Single parents getting laid off
Man, how much more can you shake?
And how far can you bend before you break?

He stood at the foot of the mountain
With a strained back and smoky lungs
Staring out at the weary machinery
Thinkin' what a strange world it's become

But it's just a part of life
To find where you belong
And just how much you can take
And just how far you bend before you break
