WALK AWAY SLOWLY And here I thought summer was a paradise Now I see it's all just a bunch of lies Everytime I see that hot sun / cold moon rise I ache, my mistake And here I thought you missed me too And you needed me like I needed you But now I'm not so sure that's true I'm broke, It's a joke But before you run forever Could you please just one last time Let down your hair, take off your coat This rain will pass like a tear-stained note Wrap your arms around my throat Disappear. That's all she wrote. You've been gone for so very long I've forgotten how to say "Welcome Home" And if I apologize for that Would you forgive me where you're at? Before you turn and walk away slowly Like you always do when you go

BUS TO ABILENE There's no waking from this dream Been asleep too long it seems No matter how hard you pinch It'll take so much more for me to flinch Inexpensive hearts get crushed all to pieces And yet they say talk is cheap Words aren't so replaceable With promises like warranties no one ever keeps There's no getting off this ride Trust me, I know, I've tried It just goes until it runs out of track But love's like a season pass that keeps you coming back Inexpensive hearts get crushed all to pieces And yet they say talk is cheap Words aren't so replaceable With promises like warranties no one ever keeps Our lack of communication and subtle agreements Led us to conflict We tried to avoid it but why would you agree To something that you never wanted? Inexpensive hearts get crushed all to pieces And yet they say talk is cheap Words aren't so replaceable With promises like warranties no one ever keeps Our lack of communication and subtle agreements Led us to conflict We tried to avoid it but why would you agree To something that you never wanted?

Savage River 05:38
SAVAGE RIVER Pretend you don't see me so you don't have to kill me Imagine I'm not in your line of sight Burn those photographs so you can delete me completely You'll see in time, when I'm far behind you, this whole thing turned out right So take me to the other side and throw me in the savage river You know I always liked the cold water back where I'm from Let the icy current run between my toes and fingers Let me wade deeper, make me float around until I'm numb Pretend you don't hear me so you don't have to speak Imagine I'm not even here at all Like all the times I lied and said I was leaving, I was deceiving Cause I'm still here, in the clear, waiting for that ice to thaw So you can take me to the other side and throw me in the savage river.... BRIDGE You're lying there, such a beautiful wreck As the wind whispers all your secrets you never kept And I can feel the trees breathing down my neck You're like all the compromised rays of light From every sun that's ever set Pretend you don't feel a thing everytime you see me Imagine that there's no more words to say... And take me to the other side and throw me in the savage river...

I was raised by peace and quiet In a bed of bluegrass neath the stars I made friends my family, and family my friends And dreamed I’d show them off by going far I grew up in the smallest little town But every time I’d look around I'd see that empathy is a dying art And it brings me down So pick up your feet Adjust all your sails Full steam ahead To something you really felt Just run… Pretend that you’re free and run… We’re all just sisters and brothers Once you step into the light Thank God for technicolor Cause I can’t see black and white Some people believe in money Some people believe in drugs Some people believe in religion Some people believe in love Some people believe everything Some people believe in lies Me? I don't guess I believe in anything I'm just trying to get by So take off your hat And let down your hair When you finally see that horizon Don’t just stop and stare Just run… Pretend you’re in love and run…

EVERY TIME IT RAINS I watched your favorite movie With someone else last night And even when she let her hair down You didn’t even cross my mind I guess I’m making progress For someone who lives in the right lane I guess I’m making new love Because it takes away the pain So I guess I’ll be alright Yeah I suppose I’ll be just fine As long as I only think of you every time it rains I realize I could get used to this It’s one thing that isn’t overthought Spending the last of my summer days Listening to records I’d forgot I bought I guess I was just too busy Listening to you complain About how we got too involved In everything that drives us insane Now you feel like a work of fiction So I can probably kick this addiction As long as I only think of you every time it rains Could you pull this out of thin air If I wasn’t in your head? Could you belt it out to the cheap seats After the microphones went dead? I guess I was a waste of time And it’s something hard to change When you’re used to being the last one picked For the team of every two player game But even in the darkest nights I suppose I’ll be alright As long as I only think of you every time it rains
6.
WASTED YOUR TIME We take to these streets like blind mice Pull over once and take off twice Ain't it nice when you can't take your own advice I know you like your solitude But your tough and headstrong attitude Is starting to take it's toll on me and you I can't keep you safe forever You'd never let me try But don't think I'll volunteer to say goodbye Just go your way and I'll go mine I'm sorry I wasted your time again They'll never let us live it down If we don't leave this as it was found Departure bound, but never too far off the ground As much as I'd love to hang around And find saving grace in this old town No... they'll never let us live this down As far away from anywhere as anyone can get You'll leave this all behind you No regrets Just go your way and I'll go mine I'm sorry I wasted your time Just go your way and I'll go mine I'm sorry I wasted your time again

HIT AT THE GATHERING You took my heart and the repo man took your car I still don't feel like we are even, but I guess we are You did so bad in school You never followed the rules But mama didn't raise no fool So you raised some hell There wasn't very many people on your side But you were a hit at the gathering Everybody loved you You were a hit at the gathering All eyes were upon you You were a hit at the gathering Everywhere I took you You took all control and made me look like shit But man, you were such a hit On our first date, you told your dad you hate him On our second date, you told me you hated datin' You just kept me around Cause I was the only guy in town That would let you put him down In front of all his friends There wasn't very many people on my side But you were a hit at the gathering...

ELSEWHERE I'm not out to start a fight I don't want to see any blood I stand for all that's right When I see nothing good We're all starved, beat and broken Scars of red and bruises black We're the poisoned kids of elsewhere Here to take our spirits back From the blackest halls of ivy To the edge of all our dreams We have struggled with disaster We are bursting at the seams Creaking boards down the corridors Blue dogs barking up your tree We're the poisoned kids of elsewhere Here to set our people free See your crumbling foundation See your tower lean and shake See your institution fall out Watch it bend. Now watch it break. Reflections in your tears All the faces, all the years We're the poisoned kids of elsewhere Ghosts made up of all your fears We're the poisoned kids of elsewhere We're the ones you always feared

GUIDE ME AWAY Another massacre in my head Another newspaper halfway read The missed calls on the voice machine dropping hints Telling me I should get out of bed For someone else's sake instead Suspense is killing me But I guess it's a first offense They always talk so tough Like I've not done enough When all my work is through That's when I beg of you Don't let em guide me away Woah-oh-oh Don't let em guide me away Man it's just common sense I've got accomplishments I don't want to lose it all Got my achievements Got my commitments Can't let em convince me to fall The sun is rising up so high Must be a different world outside So many cars in a long straight line But where do they go for the final commute? Are we all in line for the same pursuit? Suspense is killing me But I guess it's the last time It nearly drives me mad I heard your mom and dad Tell you that you look insane With my face in your picture frame But don't let em guide me away Woah-oh-oh Don't let em guide me away Tomorrow's a new day The next is the same way You just gotta break the routine You have to start somewhere Why build your own nightmare? When you could be building your dream? It's not the song, it's just the way you sing it Cause the bell won't chime if you're never there to ring it They're just too far gone Why have I been holding out so long? Don't let em guide me away Woah-oh-oh Don't let em guide me away CARPE DIEM VERSION I look up at the sun Yeah it's still the same one Just bigger and brighter it seems I have to start somewhere Let go of my nightmares And learn how to chase down a dream

MANCHESTER SUITE PART ONE There's a chill in the wind here Winter's dawn, coming on, I fear Like anyone who's anyone, I've made mistakes Packing up, leaving town, my escape They'll never make the connection No they'll never know I was there The night it all went down In that Manchester town Line em up against the wall Make em pay, set em straight, see em crawl Found each one out in the sticks All but one, headin out, ninety o' six They'll never make the connection No they'll never know the shot was mine The night it all went down In that Manchester town PART TWO Southbound on the interstate Tennessee I'm coming for ya What's done is done and I'm on the run It's too late to turn this thing around Tennessee I'm desperate for ya What's done is done, I don't trust anyone Darkness on the edge of Knoxville Tennessee, I'm counting on ya Peacemaker buried out in Daniel Boone Mountains left, mountains right Find a place to hide, just one more night Tennessee, I too will be buried soon Tennessee, have mercy on me Tennessee PART THREE Glory hallelujah I know I never knew ya But Lord, I need your help tonight I shot in man back in Kentucky Watched him die, and somehow got lucky Enough to make it out alive and out of sight My friends all up there doing time Hardly made the news for the crime After all I was the one who fired the gun They just helped this selfish killer out Oh Lord forgive me, and let them out Free them for they're not the guilty ones Glory Glory Hallelujah I must admit I never knew ya But Lord, I need your help tonight Forgive me for I know not what I do But I know exactly what I did On desperate knees I come to you... PART FOUR Police and hellhounds behind me Probably not too far now behind me Pretty soon you know they'll find me Abandoned cabin up on the hillside Half the highway took in a landslide Nobody but me on my side Somehow they made the connection One of them guys spilled, I just know I can feel them out tonight Searching the forest left and right For the 45 I buried low I don't know how they could have found out Unless one of those thugs ratted me out They have to be after me, I have no doubt Could you even get a truck up here? What's that? Is that them I hear? Are they already out there? WHO'S OUT THERE?!?! I just know, I just know they made the connection It's not even been 12 hours but I know they're on their way Tonight's the night it all goes down From Tennessee to Manchester Town I can feel the trees breathing down my neck I'm like all the compromised rays of light from every sun that's ever set I know, I know, I know they're gonna find me here Or no, no, no, I'm stuck growing old here or no, no, no, I'm gonna die here Glory Glory Hallelujah Lord I know I never knew ya I just know, I just know, I'm gonna die here I'm gonna die here...

about

One half of a dual-album concept, Carpe Noctem (in contrast to Carpe Diem) is a dark, dreary, and more rustic rock record from Ryan Garrett. Sitting in the producer's chair for the first time in six years, Carpe Diem and Carpe Noctem serve as Garrett's first true "solo project" since his debut album Heartland Avenue in 2011.
